The origins of what is now known as chess can be traced back to the Gupta Empire in India. Though the actual rules of chaturanga are unknown, it resembles modern chess in appearance, with a few significant changes. The pieces are from the infantry, elephants, cavalry, and chariots, the principal military components during that time.
