When Gucci first opened its doors, it was a humble, family-owned leather goods store. Guccio Gucci, a Florence-born merchant, pioneered the renowned brand’s modest beginning. Guccio began his career as a young man working at the opulent Savoy Hotel in London, where he developed an early interest in leather goods. He was lured to the beautiful suitcases and bags of the affluent customers. As a result, he returned to Florence, where he grew up, with the idea of opening his own store.
