Who Is Pam Kaur? HSBC’s First Woman CFO & Her Inspiring Journey

New Year’s Day in 2025 also saw a new dawn in HSBC (Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank Corporation) Bank’s 160-year-old operational history. In an unprecedented first, Pam Kaur, a graduate of Panjab University, took over the role of the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of HSBC. HSBC, the banking corporation that was established in 1866 in Hong Kong by the British, has never had a woman in the position of a CFO. Kaur’s appointment to this prestigious role has shattered the glass ceiling.

Pam Kaur’s appointment though, mustn’t have been a surprise in the banking corporation’s inner circles. This is because of her long and illustrious career in auditing, risks, and compliance, spanning four decades in the banking sector. Her work is undoubtedly impressive and her reputation precedes her.

After completing her bachelor’s degree, Kaur also did her MBA in finance from Panjab University. Separately, she is also a qualified Chartered Accountant. After finishing her stint at Deutsche Bank, Kaur joined HSBC as an internal audit head in 2013. She spent the next decade showing progress and rising through the ranks of the corporation.

Kaur became a group chief risk officer and then a compliance officer before getting her most recent promotion. Her resume also includes working for Citi and Lloyd’s Banking Group and Royal Bank of Scotland.

Pam Kaur’s appointment to the role, while interesting in itself, comes at an even more interesting and challenging time in the banking sector. Interest rates are falling through the floor and geopolitical tensions are rising between China and Hong Kong. Kaur’s challenges began immediately after she assumed her new position on 1st January 2025.

Her time of promotion, in a way, is akin to when she joined HSBC 11 years ago. The bank had then agreed to anti-money laundering and violated sanctions to enter a deferred prosecution agreement with the US Justice Department. HSBC CEO Georges Elhedery, however, believed that Kaur would’ve been up for the task, whatsoever. And Pam Kaur didn’t disappoint. She held the position with much respect and did her job with due diligence.

As per a report by Bloomberg (also reported in the Economic Times), Eldehery said in a statement, “We had a strong bench of internal and external candidates to choose from and Pam was the exceptional candidate to recommend to the board.” Just like Kaur elevated the company’s position in the various roles she assumed over the years, the board and management are confident that she will do the same as the CFO.

Since Eldehery has big ambitious cost cuts for HSBC planned in the foreseeable future, this promotion for Pam Kaur also provided a great opportunity for her to shine again. Not only did Kaur open many doors for women in finance, but she also beat the likes of other highly qualified candidates. Bloomberg further reports that Kaur was the frontrunner ahead of candidates like Greg Guyett, head of global banking and markets; Willard McLane, group head of strategy and corporate development, and Kavita Mahtani, the CFO of HSBC’s Europe and Western Markets.

With this promotion, Kaur also joins the likes of Morgan Stanley CFO Sharon Yeshaya, Citi CEO Jane Fraser, and JP Morgan’s Marianne Lake, among others. She not only broke the ceiling for women but has also served as an inspiration for Indians all around the world.
