On August 31, 2026, Lionel Messi bid adios to the game he so dearly loves at an international level. A stalwart of the game and arguably the Greatest of All Time, Lionel Messi will no longer be seen in a Blue-and-White jersey playing for Argentina.
The decision comes in the wake of his father, Jorge Messi’s recent passing on 7th August, 2026, and a month-and-a-half after Argentina’s loss to Spain at the FIFA World Cup final. The football world did not take this news lightly.
Lionel Messi meant a lot to the footballing world, especially to Barcelona and Argentina fans. When he finally lifted the World Cup in Qatar in 2022, that was a burst of joy for every football fan. It was as if they were living in a drought-affected region, waiting for the rainfall every four years. Eventually, it poured on 18th December, 2022 – A day worth remembering for most, if not all, football fans.
Lionel Messi was born in Rosario, Santa Fe province. At age 11, he was diagnosed with Growth Hormone Deficiency (GHD), which stunted his physical growth and limited his height to 5’7”. It was a major hindrance to young Messi’s big footballing dreams. But the Argentine was just too magical to let anything stop him.
Lionel Messi was signed for Barcelona when he was just 13 years old. The famous story goes that FC Barcelona’s technical director at the time, Carles Rexach, signed a 13-year-old Lionel Messi for Barcelona on a napkin.
This was to stop him from joining a rival club, as his dad, Jorge Messi, was growing anxious about the delayed official commitment and threatened to take his son back home to Argentina.
Rexach’s rush to secure the napkin and ensure Messi joined Barcelona started a partnership that left a lasting and enduring legacy. From 2000, Messi stayed in Barcelona for more than two decades, creating a bond that forever linked him to the Spanish city.
It also helped that his strongest contemporary, Cristiano Ronaldo, was the main player for Real Madrid, Barcelona’s historical archrival.
This also began the long-lasting rivalry between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. El Clásico had an added, spicier reason to watch: Messi vs Ronaldo.
Countless El Clásicos, goals by both players, comparisons of goals they scored, and most importantly for fans, the bragging rights of the Ballon d’Or between Messi and Ronaldo continued for more than a decade. The flickering light of that rivalry was still there in this 2026 FIFA World Cup, when Messi represented Argentina and Ronaldo played for Portugal for one last time.
Lionel Messi achieved nearly everything there is to achieve in his long and illustrious career. He won 46 team trophies, including 10 La Liga titles and 4 UEFA Champions League titles with FC Barcelona. He also won the Ballon d’Or, football’s highest award, a record 8 times, more than any other footballer ever. And finally, the biggest icing on the cake came very late in his career in 2022, when he got to lift the FIFA World Cup with Argentina.
Many felt that Messi completed football then and there in 2022. He, however, had other plans.
Lionel Messi returned in his favorite Blue-and-White jersey one more time in 2026 and marshalled his team into the finals. Unfortunately, Spain got the better of Argentina on that night and won the final 1-0. Things didn’t end on a high for the champion. But the GOAT can hold his head very high, as he probably achieved more than most, if not all, footballers can ever achieve in their lifetimes.
Happy Retirement to the GOAT – Lionel Messi.
