IPL Fan Culture: What CSK and RCB Reveal About Loyalty and Fandom Issues

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have two of the most hardcore, loyal, and devoted fan bases in the entire IPL. Throughout the Indian Premier League’s 18-year history, CSK and RCB have accrued two of the biggest fan bases in the sporting world (alongside Mumbai Indians). Both CSK and RCB have arguably provided some of the most memorable, heart-pounding, and nail-biting matches between them. And as it does with any high-octane clash, it pumped up the respective fans of each franchise on every occasion. The match on 3rd May 2025 at Chinnaswamy Stadium was no different.

RCB won the toss and chose to bat, putting up a more-than-decent total of 213/5 in their 20 overs, courtesy of Romario Shepherd’s late burst of 53(14). CSK looked well on their way to chase it down without much trouble, courtesy of teenager Ayush Mhatre’s blistering 94(48). The game went down to the wire, with CSK needing 6 off the last 3 balls. With two singles, CSK needed 4 off the last delivery. They could only manage a single, and RCB won by 2 runs. After this tight finish, the entire Chinnaswamy Stadium went berserk.

Hooting, cheering, shouting, yelling – Not a single RCB fan left any stone unturned in their celebration. They had, after all, defeated their arch-nemesis. CSK has always had an upper hand against RCB (both in Chinnaswamy and at Chepauk), and mostly won the close games before. This time, it was RCB’s turn. And with all the pent-up anger and frustration stored in them for years, the fans took every opportunity to display their extravagant celebrations and mock their CSK colleagues.

What Exactly Transpired at the CSK vs RCB Match?

The fan battles had already started outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium before the match began. Vendors outside the stadium were selling jerseys with ‘black-and-white’ stripes (alluding to what prisoners wear) with 2016-17 written on them. Some of those prisoner jerseys even had MS Dhoni’s jersey number 7 written on them. This was a cheap mock stunt by RCB fans to troll CSK for their two-year ban of two years in 2016-17. The ban was imposed upon them due to their then-team principal, Gurunath Meiyappan’s involvement in a betting scandal.

This jersey stunt was just one of the many notable highlights from that evening’s fan battles. After the game was over, CSK and RCB fans kept heckling each other, fighting each other, and throwing incessant abuses at each other, all the while blocking the road and causing a traffic jam.

That wasn’t all of it. Younger girls and women from either side felt, but mostly CSK, felt unsafe. They were heckled and mocked openly in public without any provocation. This isn’t just isolated to Bangalore. Similarly, ugly incidents happened last year at Chepauk in Chennai.

The ugly fan battles aren’t specific to one group or one franchise. It’s devoid of such things, except raw human behaviour. While the fan energy and passion of both sides are infectious, it does cross the line at times. When this incident was discussed on the KimAppa podcast (Jarrod Kimber and Robin Uthappa), Kimber likened CSK and MI to the LA Lakers and Boston Celtics from the NBA.

This was because they were the most successful franchises of the respective sports leagues. He likened RCB to the New York Knicks – a very popular team, but doesn’t win a lot. Similar fan battles, that quite often get out of hand and become ugly, aren’t just restricted to the South Indian Derby. It happens all around the globe.

Intense Fan Battles from Around the Globe

In South America, football matches often turn violent and bloody. Take the Argentina vs Brazil World Cup qualifier game that had to face a 30-minute delay to begin. This was due to the violent fans from rival sides who caused chaos inside the stadium. There were physical fights, punches thrown, and there was blood. World Cup winner Lionel Messi even walked off the field with concern.

Incidents like this aren’t isolated in sports. The National Hockey League often turns violent after every other match in Canada. Fans of NHL teams such as the Edmonton Oilers, Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings, etc., don’t hold back before throwing the first punch to their rival fans. Take one of the biggest football leagues in the world – the English Premier League (EPL). The two biggest rival teams there, Manchester United and Manchester City, have large, passionate fan bases around the world.

History suggests, as per some accounts, that teenagers in England would often come out on the streets and engage in knife fights. This was eventually curbed, among other measures, by forming two of the biggest sports franchises ever – Manchester United and Manchester City. Their rivalry runs deep, and their fans love to hate their rivals with intense fervor.

Psychology Behind Fan Love and Fan Battles

Why are people, especially men, so intensely passionate about sports and deeply attached to their respective teams? It is a question that has baffled psychologists since time immemorial. Some suggest that it gives people a purpose to express all the deep-seated negativity in their lives.

Things that are going wrong in someone’s life create a sense of frustration that sports help clear out. It allows a clean window for individuals to do what they otherwise wouldn’t be able to do. This crazy level of fandom increases every year until it reaches Euphoria. While that is fine and acceptable, it shouldn’t ever be harmful or problematic to anyone.

There is also a theory as to how men in ancient times used to enjoy winning battles and wars, and feeling better about their community than others. Essentially, the same feeling has transferred onto sports and sports stars. The war generals became the athletes, and battlefields turned into sports matches. The level of hero-worship, adulation, and celebration remained the same.

Conclusion – How Can Effective Sports Management Counter That?

Sports Management involves a lot of things, and fan engagement is a part of it. While almost the entirety of their job profile is designed to increase the viewership and improve the sporting experience for players and viewers alike, they will also be responsible for making that same experience delightful, exciting, and not a struggle.

Die-hard fan support definitely enhances the viewing experience of a sports match. But it also becomes equally important for the management teams to ensure that the people in the stadium who’ve come to watch the game, irrespective of their loyalty and support, end up having a great time and go home happy. They should not feel scared or threatened at any point in time, no matter how intense and passionate the fan behavior gets on any side.

In this case, the RCB management and the CSK management must work together to ensure that no such issues ever escalate inside the stadium. They must condemn any acts of physical intimidation and take necessary steps, or at least send a warning, to those who engage in such ludicrous behavior. It relies entirely up to the management what message they want to send to their fans and what sort of expectations from them do they prioritize.

To sum up, fan culture is a healthy aspect of the game, but it should stay within its limits. It is much more important that people enjoy their game. Otherwise, there is no limit to the depths to which a fan battle can stoop. Remember how Hardik Pandya was booed and abused by the entire crowd in every stadium in the 2024 season. Things should be kept in control.
