Indian medal winners at the Commonwealth Games 2022

The Commonwealth Games 2022 saw over 4,500 athletes competing from 72 countries over a period of 11 days where India finished strong with a total of 61 medals including 22 gold, 16 silver and 23 bronze. Finishing in fourth place in the games behind Australia, England and Canada.
While Indian athletes won medals across many sports, a few of these sports saw exceptional performance. Some of these sports are:

A. Badminton:

This year saw the young guns of Badminton in India to the established players making a strong mark at Commonwealth Games 2022 in UK. Winning in singles to men’s and women’s doubles, here are the heroes of Badminton from India:

-Chirag Chandrashekhar Shetty and Satwik Sairaj Rankireddy won a Gold medal in men’s double at the Commonwealth Games final in the UK.
-The young pair of Tressa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand made their mark by winning a bronze medal.
-PV Sindhu, a star of Indian Badminton and globally known talent, once again made her country proud by winning the Gold Medal in Women’s singles.
-Lakshya Sen, another star of Indian Badminton, grabbed a gold medal in Men’s singles.
-Kidambi Srikanth signed off with a bronze medal for the country.

B. Weightlifting:

Indian weightlifting athletes won 10 medals in Commonwealth Games 2022. Here is a list of all the winners:

-Mirabai Chanu is one of the star weightlifters from India, claiming India’s first Gold Medal at Commonwealth Games 2022 on her record-smashing spree of a performance.
-Jeremy Lalrinnunga is a young 19-year-old weightlifter who claimed the second gold for India on the third day in the 67 kg category.
-Anchita Sheuli won the third gold for India with a record-breaking performance in 73 kg. Achinta created a Commonwealth Games record by lifting a total of 313 kg.
-Bindyarani Devi won a silver medal for India in the women’s 55 kg.
-Gururaja Poojary won a bronze medal in the men’s 61 kg weightlifting category.
-Sanket Mahadev Sargar won silver for the men’s 55 kg category.
-Harjinder Kaur won a bronze medal in the women’s 71 kg weightlifting category.
-Vikas Thakur is a heavy weightlifter who won a silver in men’s 96 kg. He lifted 346kg to finish and claimed this third Commonwealth Games medal.
-Lovepreet Singh won a bronze medal in the men’s 109 kg category.
-Gurdeep Singh won a bronze medal in the 109+kg event at the Commonwealth Games 2022.

C. Wrestling:

Indian wrestlers have long been known for winning laurels at various international gaming events, and they were no exception to their fine performances at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in the UK. Here is a list of the star performers:

-Pooja Gehlot defeated Christine Lemofack Letchidijo of Scotland and won the bronze medal in the women’s freestyle 50 kg category.
-Ravi Kumar Dahiya won gold in men’s 57 kg freestyle wrestling after beating Nigeria’s Ebikewenimo Welson.
-Vinesh Phoghat won her last group bout against Sri Lanka’s Chamodya Keshani Maduravalage Don to win a gold medal in the women’s 53 kg category.
-Naveen defeated Pakistan’s Muhammad Sharif Tahir to win a gold medal in men’s freestyle 74 kg category in wrestling.
-Pooja Sihag won a bronze medal by beating Australia’s Naomi de Bruine.
-Deepak Nehra defeated Pakistan’s Tayab Raza 10-2 in a bronze play-off.
-Anshu Malik won a silver medal for India after reaching the women’s 57 kg final.
-Bajrang Punia is also a Tokyo Olympics Bronze medallist; he won Gold at Commonwealth Games 2022 in the men’s 65 kg category.
-Sakshi Malik won Gold in the women’s 62 kg category at Commonwealth Games 2022.
-Deepak Punia won another gold for India at Commonwealth Games 2022 in the men’s freestyle 86kg category.
-Divya Kakran won bronze in women’s 68 kg freestyle wrestling.
-Mohit Grewal won bronze in men’s freestyle 125 kg.

D. Boxing:

This is another sport format where Indians have been known to win medals for decades. A sport that is highly celebrated and recognized in the country, there is a growing talent in the country for boxing. The Ministry of Sports also supports India to further these athletes into international superstars. Some winners from boxing at Commonwealth this year have been:

-Jasmine Lamboria won a bronze medal in Boxing in the women’s lightweight – 60kg category after losing to England’s Gemma Paise Richardson.
-Mohammad Hussamuddin, a 28-year-old boxer, claimed bronze for the country at the Commonwealth Games 2022.
-Rohit Tokas, a 29-year-old Indian Boxer, won another bronze for the country, winning against Zambia’s Stephen Zimbaat.
-Nitu Ghangas won a gold medal in women’s 48 kg at the Commonwealth Games 2022.
-Amit Panghal won India a Gold medal in 51 kg category.
-Nikhat Zareen defeated Carly McNaul of Northern Ireland in the final of women’s 50 kg at the Commonwealth Games 2022 to win a gold medal.
-Sagar Ahlawat won a silver medal in the men’s 92+ kg category.

– Indian Women’s Cricket Team won a silver medal after losing against Australia by nine runs.
– Indian Women’s Hockey Team won a bronze medal to finish on a high note at the Commonwealth Games 2022.
– Indian Men’s Hockey Team won a silver medal after losing against Australia.
– Indian Men Lawn Bowls team won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022.
Indian Women’s Lawn Bowls team won a gold medal making history for the country at the Commonwealth Games 2022.
Indian Men’s Table Tennis team won a Gold medal after a close fight against Singapore.
Indian Table Tennis Mixed team won India’s maiden mixed doubles Gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022.
