A Career in the Growing Indian Tourism Industry

The tourism sector in India is among the fastest growing industries in the world. Its contribution to the GDP of the nation has been increasing rapidly in recent years. As per a report from IBEF, India ranked 3rd among 184 countries in terms of travel and tourism’s total contribution to GDP. The government of India has taken many initiatives to promote and support tourism and growth is expected to continue in the future.

Indian Tourism Industry – An Overview

According to the May 2017 IBEF report, Indian tourism industry’s contribution to GDP in 2016 was estimated to be USD 47 billion. Foreign tourist arrivals in India too has been increasing year on year. The report suggested that there were 6.3 lakh foreign travellers visiting India in the month as compared to 5.27 lakh in May 2016. The government is focussing on infrastructure development and promoting tourism in various other forms to further growth. The government has also announced reforms in the cruise tourism industry to tap the potential of India in the sector. This move is expected to develop the industry and create jobs for many.

Tourism Career Prospects

The tourism sector created 9% of the total employment opportunities in India during the year 2016. There are about 38.4 million people working for tourism and hospitality industry and the number is expected to reach 46.42 million by 2026. With more investment, backed by government support, the industry will grow and will need qualified professionals to spearhead the growth. A number of educational institutions in India have been offering undergraduate and postgraduate programs, with tourism and hospitality as a specialization, in order to create the talent pool required for the sector.
